Drilling through gems with a dremel

I believe you're correct, though I think the cause for concern is
CJD or vCJD rather than HIV. The proteins that transmit these
diseases are much more resilient than the HIV viral particles.

Yes, that makes more sense Kit. Are there any UK jewellers getting
used bits from UK dentists? I’d be interested to know, although as I
say, I can’t see it happening due to beaurocracy.

I spoke with my dentist and explaines I made jewelry etc. and she
was happy to call me the next time she had some tools she could no
longer use the way they were.

Are you in the UK or the US? I honestly can’t see it happening in
the UK. The beaurocracy in our country is astounding! And our NHS
dental system is SO stretched, that there are not enough NHS dentists
to go around. There are thousands of patients without a dentist, and
so any patients not turning up to appointments, get struck off the
practice’s list. Therefore, although they will be sterilising between
patients, it’s severely doubtful that they’d take the extra time and
resources involved, to sterilise the bits after their final use, with
a view to giving them away to jewellers. As I said, I may be wrong
and I’ve yet to ask, but I will ask the next time I have an
appointment.

Please don’t be concerned about HIV in used dental picks. It just
isn’t going to happen. Used dental picks are great tools when you
can get your hands on them!

I’m not in the slightest bit concerned about HIV in used dental
picks or bits. I knew someone would misinterpret my words when I
mentioned it. I was suggesting a possible reason why we may not be
able to get our hands on them in the UK - the red tape and
beaurocracy here is ridiculous and medical folks do not hand out used
tools. I suggested that they are probably treated and disposed of as
sharps, because of possible infection with various pathogens.
