If nobody is watching does it matter how you cheat?
A focusing Maglite will give you a nice ellipse to draw around, if
you adjust the distance and tilt to give the required proportions.
Yeah I do use drawing and rendering packages, but in this instance
I'm required to use lead pencil.

I’m not great at drawing freehand shapes, especially starting on a
blank piece of paper. To draw a ellipse, oval, or circle, I start
with 8-16 dots on the page and then draw the shape. Not so much of a
“connect the dot” method, but more using the dots as reference
points. Good luck on your quest.

I'm not sure what your point is...
My point is that I can draw ellipses and all manner of things via
high def film quality applications.
Drawing them by hand is another kettle of fish, and the reason I
started this thread

I don’t draw well - when I need to draw something, I print out a
photo, or a graphic, or, as in this case, an ellipse, and then trace
over, with a lead pencil,. then it has a hand-drawn look, which I
prefer anyway.
