Does sterling silver ever rust?

I just assumed it was all silver, because the edges haven't been
sanded down so that they are smooth, and it seems that you are
looking at the edge of a piece of silver sheet metal that had been
sawed.

One can plate over sawed edges and just get plated saw marks, so I
wouldn’t go by that to determine metal content. A lot of plating is
done over brass or copper, which will not attract a magnet. What
you would probably have to do is file a notch somewhere to get a
look at what’s underneath, but that doesn’t help the box any. I’d
assume it’s NOT solid silver.

As you probably recall, I’m the one who purchased “sterling” silver
beads from a vendor at a nationally-recognized bead show, only to
find that some beads on my bracelet rusted. Here’s the update. I
phoned the vendor. I’m guessing it was a home phone number, and his
wife answered. (He is probably on the road doing shows.) She was
apologetic, explained that they buy large quantities that are sold
to them as silver, and perhaps my items must have slipped through.
Whether or not that is true, she still was very nice and offered to
credit me on my charge. As I thought about it, I decided I would
really rather have it replaced in silver, since the vendor’s prices
were really good. I returned my beads with a letter, asking that
they be replaced with sterling beads, even if they were a different
design.

I received the package yesterday. I was only expecting the actual
weight of the beads to be replaced, since I did pay by the ounce (as
opposed to by the piece) originally. She ended up returning the
original beads I sent to her (probably so I could use them anyways
if I wanted), and then sent me sterling beads–probably triple the
weight of the beads I originally purchased!!! Major bonus!!

Of course, we could debate whether or not the original selling of
the “fake” beads was a true error or purposely misleading, but due
to their fabulous customer service, my opinion is the original sale
was an honest mistake. I wasn’t even sure I would get a response,
and here I get triple!!! Yeah!!!

And, yes, I would buy from this vendor again. I’ll just bring a
magnet.

Thanks for all who helped me out on this!!

problem!

The vendor who accidentally sold me the rusting “sterling,” but then
replaced my beads with about triple the weight, is Holy & Pure
Gemstones out of New York. They were at the Whole Bead Show. Great
customer service!!
