Digital Camera on Budget

I use the same camera and I love it; the macro function is excellent

  • I’m a fan of canon in general, just to make it clear

any issues with photography are mine and not the camera’s.

FYI: I think this is in keeping with the spirit of this thread.

MJSA’s Trade Show for Jewelry Making, Sept. 17-18 in Providence,
R.I., will include the following free seminar:

PHOTOGRAPHING JEWELRY WITH MINIMAL EQUIPMENT
Karen Philippi, Philippi Photographi

This seminar takes a look at photographing jewelry without a studio.
It will boil the process down to the necessities so you can create a
successful image without a considerable amount of time, money, or
knowledge. Philippi will walk you through the camera and provide you
with the basic background and lighting setup. She will also discuss
what makes an image successful. All levels of experience are welcome
to attend.

If you can attend the show, which targets smaller shops and
independent craftspeople and designers, the seminar might be worth
your while. For more visit mjsa.org.

I want to thank all of you for your input as I checked each camera
out that was mentioned. After asking the same questions of everyone
I met, along w/ 2 local camera shops…the same camera kept coming
up. Canon S5 IS.

Turns out one of the jewelry stores here just purchased one to do
macro shooting (which is what I need one for)…Pilchuk Glass School
just purchased one and several other folks I ran into. Placed my
order this morning and anxious for it’s arrival.

Greatly appreciate this forum and for everyone’s advice on so many
subjects

Liane,

I think you’ll be pleased with your camera choice.

I just received my new Canon Rebel SXi, which will be used as the
core camera for my upgrade to “Jewelry Photography Made Easy”. I’ve
decided to create a section on point-and-shoots as well, and I think
I’ll be using the Canon S5 IS for that…maybe. I may choose an
even lower priced model, perhaps one of the Powershots, as they are
so popular.

But, you’ve made a good choice.

Now get a decent lighting setup!

I’m late chiming in on this thread but you’re going to love the
S5is. I have the S2is and lovelovelove it. The Super Macro mode is
invaluable for jewelry shots. You can really get creative with
angles, as well. I have a Canon 10D at my disposal too, and pretty
much always use the S2is.

Congratulations on an excellent choice!
