In my experience, the quickest way to spot synthetic quartz is to
check for black light fluorescence.
ALL the known synthetic quartz rough I have checked, amethyst and
citrine, has shown strong fluorescence. A few known natural stones
have shown fluorescence also, but very weakly compared to synthetics.
I do not know if this applies to other synthetics, nor why it occurs
with hydrothermal quartz.
