Definition of "jeweler"

What's the name of the book?

Jewelry in America 1600-1900 by Martha Gandy Fales.

It is very interesting so far. Some sections read easier than
others. But I am enjoying looking at all the unusual jewelry of
early america and learning about the customs of the time. Much of
the jewelry was quite romantic.

I that question is like the one not to long ago, “what makes a
designer?” In my opinion, this has the same type of answer.

In the world most of us live in, you’re a jeweler if your competent
at your craft. Doesn’t mean you have to be able to do the full gambit
of jewelry creation, but you make what you, and at least a couple
other people, non family members or friends, are willing to pay for.

My Mason and Packer Jewellery dictionary doesn’t even have a
definition for jewelry, jewellery, or jeweller/ jeweler.

Now, if you want to know a supplier like Stullers definition, you
need to have a boat load of money, able to pay your bills on time, a
valid tax number, and have a good rating with the JBT. I doubt they
even care if you make or sell one item, as long as you meet the other
qualifications.

So let me ask you, do you think you’re a jeweler? Do any of your
friends? Then if it was up to me, which its not, then I would say,
you’re a jeweler. You might not be in the jewelry business, you might
be a hobby or a student jeweler, but I would consider you a jeweler.
I know some people who have jewelry stores, claim to be highly
skilled jewelers, and insist they know everything because they have
been in business for many years. But they don’t even own a bench,
source it all out. They have no gemological training or any other
education to back it up but their self proclaimed life experience
They are sells people, but are well established in the area as
jewelers. They make a fair living at it as well. Personally I would
not consider them a real jeweler. But my opinion means absolutely
nothing.

I believe that the definition of a jeweler, from a customer
perspective, is “the person who is responsible to the customer for
the jewelery product”, ie the person that the customer goes to in
order to buy, commision or service jewelery.

Confusion over the definition arises within the trade. A
sub-contractor has a jeweler for a customer, an employee has an
employer for a customer, a wholesaler has jewelers for customers; but
it is the customer who buys and wears the jewelery that has the final
say as to who the jeweler is.

Was Faberge a jeweller? He employed 200 workers in his heyday;
business people, designers, artists, and specialists in each facet
of jewellery creation. They were well paid, worked 12-hour days, and
their output had to be perfect (pieces not up to standard were
summarily destroyed). Those were the days when time had a different
meaning, and gold was worth more than labour. The customer went to
see Faberge the jeweler, even though he never did any work on the
actual pieces, he made it all happen, and he was responsible to the
customer.

about the definition.

Shakespeare had Romeo pose the question of Julliet’s family name
"what is in a name, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet",
or something close to it.

I have resolved this question at least for myself by not answering
"what I am". Instead I respond by answering what I do. I bend metal
and I enamel it. And sometimes the metal piece is small enough to be
worn. I call such pieces art jewellery, but you are willing to call
it what you wish, including kitsch.

I have learned that buyers aren’t interested in diplommas and
degrees, etc. What they are interested in is what the product is.
And if they believe that they receive value for money thay will buy
it.

Let us define ourselves by our actions and let others create the
labels.

who stinks a lot like copper so can’t be a rose

First off, I good naturedly would suggest that this whole thread, and
the designer thread, again, good naturedly, is for people with way
too much time on their hands. What does it matter? A rose by any
other name… But it’s really quite simple, if you want to get
into it. A jeweler is one who jewels. Jewelling is the process of
encrusting surfaces with By extension it has come to mean
one who sets jewels, and yes, even one who sells jewels. The word
comes from way back in history, so it has aquired many meanings, but
the essential thing is that it implies dealing with precious gems
i.e - jewels. But, even though I call myself that, partly because it
was my Union Classification, it’s like the comedian asked, “So, what,
are we going to have person-hole covers in the streets?”
