Comments: Have unique cabbing and faceting rough for the
individual designer. Also love to cut opals. Looking for info on
good contacts for rough opal. Also looking to be in contact with
someone in Australia concerning cutting and selling for them here
in U.S. Also, sterling silver designer. Looking forward to
hearing from people concerning custom cutting.

Hi Scott,

I was just purging my e-mail file and ran across your message
below. I meant to respond earlier and didn’t for some reason.
I’d be interested in learning more about your cabbing and
faceting rough. I do a bit of each in addition to metalsmithing.
I too specialize in opal-cutting when I can find good rough, a
growing problem – I started back in the good old days when top
rough was $60 oz. The problem: $60 then was like $3,000 to me
now! But when I was able to get a parcel from Australia it was
beautiful stuff.

You mention custom cutting. Do you do custom faceting in
addition to opal-cutting? If so, e-mail prices and parameters.
Within the next year I hope to expand to the point I’ll need
occasional cutting beyond what I and my present cutters can
handle. I need virtuoso cutting, though. Proper angles, top
yield and polish, and ability to do barions, checkerboards,
opposed bar, etc. in a variety of shapes.

Thanks,

Rick Martin

To Orchid members:

The above was intended as a private post – not as a forum
message. I goofed and apologize for the clutter. Sorry.

My cutter does all the cuts you mention Rick. He commonly works
in material costing 10’s of thousands of dollars, so he’s no
slouch. Email me privately if you want me to put you in touch
with him
