Cats in Studios - does it work?

Hello Kay,

My answer to a soldering bench cover - thanks to an alert Orchidian -
is a metal mesh file cube from Target. Since it’s metal, it’s
fire-resistant and I can invert the cube to cover the surfaces right
after soldering. Cost was US$10. I used to use a plastic milk carton
crate, but for obvious reasons, had to wait for cool down before
putting it over the soldering area.

After describing my “cat-proofed” workshop I received a few requests
to see pictures of it. I’ve put up a web page showing the space and
some of it’s details. It is “My Workshop On A Wall” at
http://www.touchmetal.com/atelier.html

As always comments are welcome and I’m happy to provide further
details if you wish to contact me offline.

Cheers,

Wow, Judy, it’s on my shopping list for tomorrow. What a great idea

  • and you’re right - being metal, no need to wait until things cool
down. I love this idea and it will go into use right away. I use a
“mini screen” (3 sections of aluminum hinged together - originally
intended to use behind pots on the stove to prevent grease from
splattering all over) behind my soldering blocks - Protects thing
sitting around in the vicinity, but was lacking in the solution of
how to cover it. Now I know. Orchidians just have an incredible
    problem solving ability. Thanks.

Very neat idea Trevor - I’ll definitely consider some of these
things as I design my space. Where is your workshop - inside or in
the garage? I’m putting mine in the garage but am somewhat concerned
about the “rusting” aspect so need to give that some thought.
Thanks for sharing.

Can she switch on the polisher with her paw? Kinda makes me freak
when I think of that.

Hi Alain,

No, my cat cannot access either of the switches on my polisher. But
I can understand your concern. It has a pretty big exhaust cabinet
(it overhangs the actual polishing wheels) that is flat on top which
gives her a good flat area to nap when she is in the mood. Besides,
she would have to turn on both switches in two different places for
the polisher to actually come on. It won’t turn on with just one
switch. The polisher cabinet is also near a window giving her a good
lookout point. (She is of course not allowed nearby when the polisher
is in use.) You can see it on my website and a couple of cute pics of
the cat too. Look in the “Studio Tour” section of my site and scroll
down. In the second picture in the left corner you can see my
polisher with some flower arrangements on top. That is where she
naps sometimes. I think she gets a little warmth from the can light
just above that spot. We built the cabinet that supports the
polisher. Very handy storage and it is on wheels!

Hello Trevor,

Thanks for sharing the great photos. I especially liked the concept
of screening between shelving units. Those limber little (and large)
felines can squirm into the strangest places!!

She, strangely, preferred to drink the water in a bucket of settled
investment rather than her own fresh water bowl, but it never
seemed to hurt her.

My dogs also seem quite drawn to drink from the quench bucket
whenever they get the chance. I discourage it by keeping the bucket
covered with a piece of chicken wire mesh when it’s not in use. But
they still manage to get a few mouthfuls of the quench water every so
often. I wonder–IS that water harmful to them if they ingest it?
Does anyone know?

For those who need to discipline cats from a distance, check out the
AirZooka (go to Google and then Froogle for best prices). It shoots
a “lump” of air only, up to 20 feet. Less messy than the
water-pistol approach, and they’ll think the forbidden spot itself
is to blame.

Hello all cat lovers. I applaud your efforts to accomodate your
friends and family in the studio. The upended metal mesh cubes work
wonderfully and screening off shelf units will too. Trevor, your
website photos are a great treat for us all.

Now, for those who don’t have time or inclination to fashion their
own screens, let me put you onto a JCPenney catalog or store. They
have cut to measure roller screens of “solar-mesh” in four colors
and two qualities in durable PVC mesh. It looks wonderful. I put
some in my house windows to prevent sun-fading tapestry furniture.
Love the effect. Can see out quite well, but from outside in, they
add some privacy. They even come in sizes to slide across patio
doors. Anyone looking for insulation against heat and cold, as well
as cat-proofing should check on these. Solar Mesh Roller Shades and
