"Cartier" Dome Ring

Hi All

Last week a woman walked into our shop with a knock off of the
cartier ring that had a glass dome set over a bed of diamonds. You
know the one…it was featured prominently in their ads a few years
ago.

Somehow the dome broke and the jeweler she bought it from isn’t
helping her get it repaired. It was glued in, I believe, so we need
a replacement dome.

My question is…

does anyone know where to get these domes? I believe they would be
some sort of crystal. Or can anyone manufacture a replacement? we
could send a mould of the ring.

It was brought to me because of my experience with glass, but it is
totally out of my league and besides the glass I use is totally
inappropriate for this job.

I figured if anyone could help her it would be this forum.

thanks

I personally think the fact that the person (company/shop/whatever)
she bought it from isn’t helping her to get it repaired, speaks loud
and clear. If it is a knock-off, then I’d say the problem is hers
and the person who sold it to her. I would feel no obligation to
repair things that the seller won’t back up. You may have a different
perspective entirely.

Can you send me a picture off forum? I may be able to help you.

The domes were acrylic… not glass. I wonder if Cartier would sell
you one…

Just kidding. Good luck finding it. By the way… not to open a can
of worms but… maybe you shouldn’t be working on knock offs. Rolex
used to put good people in a world of hurt over changing a battery in
a fake Rolex watch… Just a thought.

Aimee,

If it’s out of your league, perhaps it’s best to communicate that to
your cusotmer, and suggest she take it back to where it was
purchased. I have found that attempting to to repair the work of
others opens up many potential pitfalls – and then you are
responsible, sometimes at great expense.

In addition, since it’s a knock-off, do you really want this person
as a customer? It would be easy to refer her back to Cartier if it
was genuine, but I wouldn’t want to take the risk of exposing her to
my designs.

Hope this helps,
PK

Hello, I pretty much agree with the post about knockoffs. Is this
person who wants the work done a customer of good long standing or
just someone you hope to make a customer? If it is a long time
customer you should have a talk with them about this and then
possibly still not do the job. Let them hassle the guy who sold it to
them. They can always threaten to inform Cartier’ about him. Often
people who buy knock offs just buy junk, they have no real taste of
their own and would buy a dog t–d if it said Rolex. Also, here, once
again someone is wanting a piece repaired that is just a can of
worms. Walk away. Once I had to create a type of knock off for a
customer when I worked at another store. It was ‘a piece in the
style of…’. I felt very bad about doing it. It wasn’t exactly
knocking off someone else’s work but close. This store also used to
mold peoples work sometimes and cast those as well. Bad business,
they only did this to pieces that couldn’t get them in trouble such
as a large prong or bail from a supplier. but really… anyhow.

Good luck. Dennis

ps. sorry to miss everyone at Tucson, I had purchased a ticket and
then at the last minute went to see an old friend who happened to be
in Phoenix. Hadn’t seen each other for 24 years. Gees, I old.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help I’ve had lots of
helpful suggestions on and off list I have yet to get back to the
woman about it, so we’ll see what she wants to do

just so you know…

I’m TOTALLY opposed to copying designs, as a person (in my short
career) who has already had my work copied… I genuinely believe she
had no idea it was another person’s design, I’m just trying to help
out someone who spent a lot of money for a ring she loved and can’t
wear now
