For those interested in this subject. The recent history of
science type book is "The golden ratio"by Mario Livio. Broadway
books 2002, ISBN 0-7679-085-5 … It is not casual reading but is
very informative for non mathematicians ( like me). I don’t
remember any use of tools including any 3 legged devise… That
still eludes me
