An afterthought to my last inquiry, what is the best way to engrave
metal, deeply so that it will stand up to mold making and casting? It
needs to economical, so that I can accomplish the engraving in my own
studio.

ertainly the cheapest way to achieve the result is to use letter
punches. They come in different sizes and save you having to buy an
engraving machine. Spark eroding does a great job on almost any
metal but not easy to find the kit secondhand. A cheap pantograph
engraver would suit you well if you are going to be doing a lot of
different wording. You can also use the pantograph to cut your own
designs.
