Best pickle for gold?

#1

Folks-

I have been making a few pieces gold pieces (14 & 18kt)and have
tried pickling them in sparex after using it for years on silver. It
just doesn’t seem to work on the oxides that form on the surface. I
don’t want to use nitric acid, as my studio has no hood & there are
little ones in the house. I’ve been using a boric acid firecoat, but
the oxides still form in a dark purplish brown mode, and won’t come
off in the pickle no matter how long they sit. I end up having to
steel wool or sand them, and that wastes gold. Any suggestions will
be welcomed.

Thanks
Linda

BTW, for those who responded on my heat hardening question, thanks
but no luck so far. I’m sticking to burnishing for now.
