Assaying Silver in Australia

Dear Orchidians,

I have a situation where a family member is attempting to sell a
substantial (182 piece) cutlery set made from Peruvian Sterling.
Living in Australia, they have attempted to sell the silver in the
past but ignorance of international Sterling Hallmarks has led to
excessive wariness in behalf of prospective buyers. Do any Orchid
members living in Oz know of a government or government sponsored
Assay office where the silver could be verified as 925 Sterling? This
could ensure that they (family) could at least recoup the value of
the metal from this remarkably beautiful set of cutlery.

Why does it need to be government assay office? PW Beck (Precious
Metal Services) does assays. I don’t what they charge but a phone
call might help. Don’t know where you are but they have offices in
Adelaide (phone 08 8440 3399) and Brisbane (phone 07 3316 2000). They
require a minimum of 2 gram for an assay… maybe a teaspoon can be
sacrificed. I’m sure there are other Aussies better informed than I
but if no-one else responds, here may be a place to start.

I’ve always found them very friendly and helpful in all dealings so
I’m sure they won’t mind giving advice if they cannot help in the way
you need.

Cheers, Renate
