Are all buffing compounds created equal?

The other day I was in Sears looking for tools for my son when I can
across, buffing compound.

They had an assortment of grades, single sticks where $1.99 the
assorted pac of 6 sticks $5.99, what makes that different then what
jewelers use? Is it like the art supply store, put an art label on
it and the price increases? Example: Krylon spays with an art label
it is 4x the price of the same product, different label at Kmart.

Is the quality different? How much different can buffing compound
be?

Also thank you to everyone who answered about “What is jewelry
design”, it was all very helpful.

Jane from MI where winter has started early!

Are buffing compounds different? In a word, yes. At least in my
experience.
