A sales rep from 3M gave a seminar at the annual COMA (Colorado
Metalsmiths Association) conference last month, and he would not
commit to a release date. He said that 3M wants to make sure it meets
their quality controls, and won’t let it out until it does.

The official answer from 3M is that they hope the product will be
available in October or November. They have had to rework the product
to make it affordable for us mere mortals, as well as come up with a
way to differentiate between the grades. It’s an amazing product
(have you tried the larger wheels? works very well in the larger
wheel sizes, especially on “non-traditional” jewelry materials), and
will be well worth the wait. I had the pleasure of trying some of the
early material, and it was as good as the larger wheels, BUT -
impossible to differentiate between the various grades…but
oh-so-sweet on platinum, stainless, titanium…

The official word from 3M is that the small, Flex-Shaft FX Wheels
are still in development and that they are scheduled for release by
3M in October or November. Whitney Worldwide will keep on top of the
situation and the minute they are available we will add them as a
"Featured Product" on our website.

In the meantime, if you have a Bench Lathe (specifically the Foredom
BL Lathe), you can get set up with a complete polishing kit for a
reasonable price right now. The kit contains all 4 wheels in each
grade (4 inch wheels), the tapered spindle adaptor you need and 2
bristle brushes with adaptor as well. For August, we giving it away
at the show price ($99).
