Thanks to everyone for your advice. I dismantled my Foredom #30 per
advice/instructions from John, David, Walter and others. Inside I
found that the bearing had been flooded with grease which had drained
down from the cable as Roy had suggested, causing the sealed bearing
to fail. A local supply bearing shop had the replacement bearings for
just a couple of dollars. My flex shaft is now good as new, except for
the body which I unfortunately marred when I dismantled the handpiece

Sorry you had to replace the bearings in the #30, but glad to hear it
turned out OK. Just an idle thought on this . . . if the grease
ruined the bearings, were they sealed??
