Are there a lot of participants in this group? Do we just have to start
our own questions? or this is centrally done?

Gabriella,
I think this is a case where if you have a question, you ask it and
the
group becomes alive?
I’ll ask a question. How many newsgroups , or groups are on the net
that deal with the jewelry industry? Who are they? If you suscribe to these
do you actively participate in on going discussions? Origionate discussions
? Or Just jump in once in awhile ?Where are you located ( state or country )?

Thanks

Hi Cj, and all other participants,

small world isn’t it? I more-less follow about 5 “jewelry or else” related
newsgroups, but participate in only one. I originate questions there for
the purpose of discussing any topics Arts and Crafts people might be
interested in. (Not necessarily jewelry people). For all other participants
of Orchid, this newsgroup is “alt. crafts.professional”. Many times it
looked that the group is loosing momentum, so I am constantly trying to be
as active as possible in order to keep others talk.
Other ones I read because every once in a while I find some great people
that are really worth talking to.
(I also subscribe to other newsgroups that are not related to jewelry. (for
example severeal classical music groups!)

However, there is just too much advertising in most of these newsgroups, be
it Spam or jewelry related products. It is amazing how many posts you can
find to try to push some merchandise. (most of them are hidden under some
disguise.)

I wanted to try Orchid out - to see what kind of discussions go on here,
but in the past month there was hardly any activity. I noticed when you
signed up CJ.
In the past few days I found the opal discussion, but alas I don’t know
anything about that.

An interesting question would be how many participants are there in this
group, and what are they looking for? What was the personal purpose of
signing up?

Learning techniques? Trying to find outlets to sell? Self advertising?
Trying to gather Belonging?

Also here is another question: do the jewelers who participate in Orchid
work only in gold, or do they accept other metal and stones as valid
jewelry as well?

I believe this should’ve been question number one!

Regards,

Gabriella

Hi Gabriella,

I suspect the purpose is anything its users turn it too. Start a thread and
see where it goes. The Artmetal list is good, thr Forge is more for
blacksmiths, Temple University has a list that is quite academic in content
(and young) and is dormant from April to September. rec.crafts jewelry and
rec.crafts.metalworking are both interesting newsgroups.

Also here is another question: do the jewelers who participate in Orchid
work only in gold, or do they accept other metal and stones as valid
jewelry as well?

I think anything goes.

Hi Gabriella and all other participants,
Always knew it was a small world.

Learning techniques? Trying to find outlets to sell? Self advertising?Trying
to gather Belonging?
I am interested in all of the above.

I am no different than most I suspect, I belong to polygon and monitor
every newsgoup and forum that has anything to do with jewelry as well as
arts and crafts.
I certainly plead quilty to the not participating as often as I
should,Between creating home page and trying to post and monitor,Takes a
good deal of time… but am trying to motivate myself to place my two cents
here and there.

In requard to trying to sell whenever, however, possible, Thats how I make a
living for the most part.

The computer world is new to me , been around seven or so months in general
and only a few months on the net, with this group as well as others. Still
learning, searching etc. All groups slow up from time to time, need some
stimulation

Personally like most all metals,Silver, platinum, etc… prefer to use gold
in most all my work.

Thanks

Hi folks,

I am a partner in a jewellery business in Hobart, Tasmania. I handle the
non-production and design aspects of the company which is why you don’t see
me participate much. We have started to use the net for sourcing purposes
and recently ordered some emerald rough from CJ and will probably order
some opals from Albert Alberth (that really is his name, he is to be found
on rec.crafts.jewellery.

There are a couple of questions here that I’ll try to answer but I wanted
to ask people when they are responding to posts to delete the non relevant
parts of the preceding posts please because “readers” like me can get tired of
scrollling through the same info time and time again.

How many newsgroups , or groups are on the net>>>that deal with the
jewelry industry? Who are they? If you suscribe to these>>>do you actively
participate in on going discussions? Origionate discussions>>>? Or Just jump
in once in awhile ?

The Butterfields have a great list of many jewellery related sites and groups.
Perhaps they could post it again to Orchid or directly to you.

For all other
participants>>of Orchid, this newsgroup is “alt. crafts.professional”.

Thanks for this as our company is commercial/arts crossover and this sounds
interesting. I’ll subscribe and try and help you keep things ticking
over.

However, there is just too much advertising in most of these newsgroups, be
it Spam or jewelry related products. It is amazing how many posts you can
find to try to push some merchandise. (most of them are hidden under some

I agree but because we are quite isolated here in Tassy, we don’t mind
suppliers letting us know what they have on offer so long as it’s not
“hard sell” presentation.

What was the personal purpose of>>signing up?>>

Learning techniques? Trying to find outlets to sell? Self advertising?
Trying to gather Belonging?

All of the above

Also here is another question: do the jewelers who participate in Orchid
work only in gold, or do they accept other metal and stones as valid
jewelry as well?

We work only in precious metals and semi-precious and precious stones. We do
a lot of work in titanium as well as 925 and gold.
